JOB DESCRIPTION:           PRINCIPAL OF ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION

 

SALARY SCHEDULE:           CERTIFIED MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL SCHEDULE

 

DEPARTMENT:                     EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF SECONDARY INSTRUCTION

 

FLSA STATUS:                      EXEMPT

POSITION SUMMARY:

The principal of Alternative Education provides instructional leadership, policy management/compliance, family communication, and support to the Mid-Del alternative program, including Career Academy, Middle School Alternative Education, SNAPs, and Reset Program.

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
  • Master's degree from an accredited four-year college or university
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful teaching.
  • OSDE-issued certified administrative certification.
  • Minimum three (3) years of building administrative experience required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Leads the development and implementation of instructional practices that support individualized learning, flexible instructional delivery, and academic success for students in a K–12 alternative education setting while aligning with district curriculum and Oklahoma academic standards.
  2. Ensures the development and monitoring of individualized learning plans that address each student’s academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs, aligned with the 16 Pillars of Alternative Education.
  3. Oversees credit recovery opportunities, flexible scheduling options, and alternative pathways that allow students to earn credits, remain on track for graduation, and prepare for postsecondary education, career training, or workforce entry.
  4. Analyzes student data related to academic progress, attendance, and behavior to guide instructional decisions, monitor program effectiveness, and ensure continuous improvement of the alternative education program.
  5. Establishes systems that promote positive behavior, personal responsibility, and social-emotional development while providing structured interventions that support student success and reduce disciplinary incidents.
  6. Develops systems to assist students transitioning into the alternative education program and back to their home campuses when appropriate, while implementing strategies that address attendance improvement, dropout prevention, and student engagement.
  7. Supervises and evaluates instructional and support staff and provides professional development aligned with best practices for working with at-risk students, trauma-informed practices, and the principles outlined in the 16 Pillars of Alternative Education.
  8. Builds partnerships with families, community organizations, counselors, and workforce development programs, including Mid-Del Technology Center, to provide students with support services, career exploration, and pathways to postsecondary success.
  9. Oversees program operations, budgets, enrollment processes, and compliance with state laws, accreditation standards, and the Oklahoma Alternative Education 16 Pillars framework to ensure the program operates effectively and supports district goals.
  10. Additional duties that may be assigned by the immediate supervisor or above.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

 

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret a wide variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
