JOB DESCRIPTION: Safety Intern

POSITION SUMMARY:
Intern will work under the supervision of a Mid-Del School employee from Safety & Security, Risk Management and Operations in carrying out duties associated with general Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) activities. These activities are intended to provide a safe and healthy environment for the students and staff of Mid-Del Public Schools. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to participate in a wide range of EH&S related tasks related to general maintenance, construction, environmental testing, recordkeeping, inspections and regulatory compliance.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program relevant to the opportunity with an approved institution.
- Preferred programs include but not limited to Occupational Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Risk Management and Emergency Management.
- Ability to recognize hazards and speak up confidently to participate in Hazard Correction.
- Ability to identify problems and work to create resolutions.
- Able to proficiently navigate online databases, and confidently utilize web-based programs.
- Knowledgeable with Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, etc.)
- Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations.
- Basic Knowledge of International Fire Code, International Building Code and Life Safety Code.
- Pass background and drug screening.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs Job Safety Assessments (JSA) and exposure monitoring.
- Assists in analysis, interpretation, and validation of information on hazardous materials/chemicals and exposure monitoring results.
- Conduct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Assessments.
- Assists in the creation and review of written safety programs.
- Assist with generating and maintaining required OSHA/PEOSH recordkeeping documents
- Assists in conducting incident investigations, determining root cause and generating a report of findings.
- Assists in creating programs and instructing employees in matters pertaining to occupational health, prevention of accidents, safe operation of equipment, personal protective equipment, and proper handling/cleanup of chemicals and hazardous materials.
- Perform environmental testing for indoor air quality
- Additional duties that may be assigned by immediate supervisor or above.
LANGUAGE AND GRAMMAR SKILLS:
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to compose and write grammatically correct correspondence and memos.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, schedule form, or blueprint form.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fume or airborne particles. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts, extreme cold (including outdoors), extreme heat (including direct sunlight), risk of electrical shock and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment will vary from somewhat loud to extremely loud.
To ensure continuity of services, a different work location may be necessary in the event of a health crisis or disruptive situation that requires the closing of school and/or office buildings. An employee’s eligibility for a varied work location will be determined by the superintendent of schools. Expectations and guidelines for this change will be distributed by the employee’s supervisor, based on his/her role and responsibilities.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Employee may occasionally be required to supervise a varying number of employees in the overall direction, coordination, and completion of tasks as assigned.
